Welcome to our Egg Drop Challenge!
It was an immensely busy week planning, drawing, and making designs for our Egg Drop Challenge. As part of our ongoing inquiry into "Why do we use different materials to suit different needs?" the children had to collaborate with their partners to create a shell to house an egg that would eventually withstand a fall of two meters and come away intact!
The children got into groups and we watched as they put together their ideas onto paper and created a shell with the materials they had brought in from home or found in school.
In UWC, we aim to give lots of opportunities to our students to practice skills in collaboration, communication and critical-thinking, and be creative at the same time. This experiment allowed them to practice most of those skills and take risks and be resilient at the same time.
There was an amazing buzz in the classroom and the designs were creative and practical at the same time. The children thought carefully about the properties of the materials being used and made their predictions before trying it out.
We had an astounding number of eggs that withstood the fall! We had 8 Golden Eggs (eggs that didn't crack) and 3 Rotten Eggs (eggs that did crack)! I'm proud to say that all our children were very encouraging of each other and not one child was upset if their experiment did not work as planned. After this we reflected on our designs to see what had happened and what they would do differently next time.
Next week, we will go deeper into the unit and ask ourselves, What happens when certain materials are heated/cooled/made met?
