Our children have been exploring artwork by a brilliant artist and naturalist, Andy Goldsworthy, who collaborates with nature to make his creations. His goal is to understand nature by directly working and participating in nature. Andy Goldsworthy works with whatever comes to hand: leaves, stones, ice and snow, sand, twigs, seeds, reeds and thorn.
Here, our children have been trying to create their own Andy Goldsworthy inspired art by working with natural materials. Thank you to our families who have been sending in twigs, leaves, stones and dry flowers. Please keep sending these in. On 20th March, all K2’s will be going to the Botanic Gardens to work on a collaborative piece of art (each class does one project) based on Andy Goldsworthy’s ideas.
Today, we made our very own paper-mache bowls using paper from old magazines. Ms Rose and I were super impressed watching them execute this art activity. If you have ever had the opportunity to do this, you will appreciate the kind of skills required to execute this project...it’s very, very tricky. The children were fantastic! In the coming week, we will paint our lovely bowls in beautiful bright colours!

In Reading Workshop, we have been pairing up in groups and learning to read with fluency and lots of expression. They have been pretending that they are on stage and performing for an audience. Over time and with repeated practice and familiarity with text, we hope children will develop fluency in reading aloud.
In Mathematics, we are getting stronger at developing strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems using small numbers. Our children have also started to explore place value (tens and ones). Next week, our focus will be to use numbers, pictures, and/or words to represent a quantity or measurement.
Thank you for the permission slips for the field trip and for the arts festival at Dover. Those who have not yet submitted, please do send these in on Monday. I will be in touch with parents who have volunteered for the field trip. Many, many thanks for offering to come along on the trip.
