It’s been an incredibly exciting week filled with opportunities to share our favourite books, read with older G6 buddies, and have famous authors and puppeteers share stories with us. Today, on the finale of it all, our children came dressed in their incredible book character costumes and attended an assembly with their G3 buddies. It never fails to amaze me how much effort and thought goes into making these costumes and a big thank you goes out to our parents for their enthusiasm and care.
On Wednesday, Sarah Mounsey, the famous author of Paw Print books, visited our class and read to our students with amazing expression and use of props. She talked the children through the process of story making, including where she gets her ideas and inspirations from. This certainly inspired our little writers during their Writing Workshop, where we delved deeper into our current unit of study, Authors as Mentors. On Thursday, the children met the delightful pupeteer Nicole Horkin. We spent time with our G6 buddies on Thursday and shared our non-fiction books. It was exciting to see the level of confidence with which our children shared books...they are becoming such super readers!
In our Reading Workshop, Reader’s Theatre, the children have continued working in small groups to perform familiar texts. They have been focusing on using character voices and adding expressions and feelings to their delivery of the text...we have also been taking videos of them performing in their groups.
During the Writing Workshop, our focus has been to write in an open genre (narrative and non-narrative) by studying the craft of Jez Alborough. Jez Alborough is a famous children’s book author and illustrator who primarily writes stories on farm animals. We studied his craft moves and techniques and are now trying to incorporate these into our own writing. We are really excited about this unit!
It has been wonderful to see some of our children begin to take action and use their learning in the real world. Last week, we had Aarya bring in a beautiful diorama of the story Jack and the Beanstalk, using reusable materials. Laila too made and brought in a lovely diorama/stage from her favorite story book Demon Dentist. Jia brought in an art piece that she made at home, based on her favourite storybook character.
We have been reading lots of books on the importance and ways of Reusing and Reducing materials. These productive discussions inspired us to make our own signs for our pod and classroom, with the hope of creating a general awareness about this topic. We also want to drive home the point that it is extremely important to take individual action if we are to make a difference to the world.
